The Date I Thought Was Perfect

I had been talking to Ethan for almost three weeks before we finally decided to meet. Everything felt easy between us from the beginning. We stayed up late messaging, laughed at the same stupid jokes, and somehow never ran out of things to say. Every morning there was a new message waiting for me, and every night ended with us saying goodnight hours later than we planned. By the time we arranged our first date, I had already started wondering whether this strange app had somehow actually worked for once.

The date started exactly how I hoped it would. Ethan looked like his pictures, smiled the same way he did during video calls, and somehow made me feel comfortable within minutes. But after sitting down at the restaurant, I noticed something strange. There was a smell around him that immediately caught my attention. It wasn’t body odor. It wasn’t sweat. It wasn’t exactly cologne either. It was incredibly strong and honestly impossible to ignore. At first I tried pretending I didn’t notice it, but throughout the evening it somehow became more obvious.

I spent the next hour secretly trying to solve the mystery in my head. Maybe he had used too much shampoo. Maybe he sprayed an entire bottle of cologne before leaving home. Maybe it was laundry detergent or some kind of hair product. The strange thing was that he seemed completely normal otherwise. We laughed, joked, and somehow still had a great time. But every few minutes my brain returned to that same question. What exactly was that smell?

By the end of the date my curiosity finally defeated me. While we walked outside toward the parking lot, I awkwardly laughed and looked at him. “Okay, I need to ask something weird,” I said. Ethan raised an eyebrow. “You smell… really strong. Not bad exactly, just really strong. Is it your cologne or something?” He stared at me for two seconds and then suddenly started laughing harder than I had seen all night.

After catching his breath he shook his head and said, “No. My apartment building had a gas leak earlier, so I spent all afternoon helping my uncle move boxes out of storage.” He looked embarrassed before adding, “The boxes were full of old garlic sausages and smoked meat from his market.” I stared at him for a second before bursting out laughing beside him. Sometimes what seems like a giant dealbreaker turns out to be the weirdest misunderstanding imaginable.
