She Washes Kitchen Towels and Bath Towels Together… Is That Really Okay?

When my sister-in-law moved in with us, everything was going smoothly until laundry day. One afternoon I noticed she had tossed the kitchen towels into the washing machine with the bath towels. I immediately asked if she meant to do that, thinking she had made a mistake. She simply smiled and said, “That’s how we’ve always done it.”

I couldn’t believe it. In my house, kitchen towels and bath towels had always been washed separately. Kitchen towels wipe up food spills, grease, and bacteria from countertops, while bath towels are used on clean skin after a shower. Mixing them together just didn’t seem right to me.

Curious to find out who was right, we started reading what cleaning experts recommend. While washing both types of towels together isn’t guaranteed to cause problems if they’re washed properly with hot water and detergent, many experts still suggest separating them whenever possible. Kitchen towels are more likely to carry food residue and bacteria, while bath towels mainly collect moisture, dead skin cells, and body oils.

Separating them can also help keep bath towels feeling fresher and prevent grease or cooking odors from transferring during the wash. It’s a simple habit that many households follow, especially when someone in the home has been sick or kitchen towels have been used for heavy cleaning tasks.

In the end, there isn’t one universal rule that every family follows. Some people wash all towels together without ever having an issue, while others prefer to keep them separate for extra hygiene and peace of mind. It all comes down to personal preference, but knowing the reasons behind each approach can help you decide what works best for your home.
