While putting away some clothes this evening, I noticed a small plastic item sitting on the shelf inside my wife’s wardrobe. At first glance, it looked like some kind of unusual tool or attachment. I picked it up, turned it over several times, and tried to figure out what it was, but nothing about it seemed familiar.
After asking around, I heard all kinds of guesses. Some people thought it was part of a household appliance, while others believed it belonged to a piece of furniture or even a child’s toy. The mystery was finally solved when someone recognized it as a self-drilling drywall anchor. These plastic anchors are designed to be screwed directly into drywall, where they create a secure mounting point for screws used to hang shelves, mirrors, curtain rods, picture frames, towel racks, and other household items.
The spiral threads allow the anchor to grip the drywall firmly, while the hollow body expands slightly when a screw is inserted, helping it hold more securely than a screw driven into drywall alone. They are commonly included with wall-mounting kits and are often left over after assembling or installing something around the house.
What looked like a mysterious object hidden in a wardrobe turned out to be an ordinary piece of home-improvement hardware. Sometimes the most puzzling discoveries have the simplest explanations, especially when they’re leftover parts from a forgotten DIY project.
