Losing my son changed our family forever, and ever since then, my daughter-in-law has been like a daughter to me. She called me one evening sounding frightened. For several days in a row, she had walked out of work only to find a plastic bottle wedged between the front tire and the wheel well of her car. At first she thought it was a strange coincidence, but when it kept happening, she knew something wasn’t right.
She couldn’t understand who would do such a thing or why. The bottle wasn’t damaged, nothing had been stolen, and there were no notes or signs of vandalism. Still, the repeated incidents left her uneasy. She began checking her surroundings every time she left work, wondering if someone was watching her.
According to the fictional story, we decided not to ignore it. Instead of removing the bottle and driving away as usual, she contacted building security and asked them to review the parking lot’s surveillance cameras. We also encouraged her to park closer to the entrance and avoid walking to her vehicle alone until they learned what was happening.
A few days later, the mystery was solved. The cameras showed that a group of teenagers had been playing thoughtless pranks in the parking lot after school. They had been placing empty plastic bottles on random cars just to startle drivers when the bottles made a loud cracking noise as the vehicles moved. There was no attempt to steal the cars or target any specific person.
Although the explanation brought everyone a sense of relief, it also reminded us that unusual situations should never be dismissed without caution. My daughter-in-law reported the incidents, the teenagers were identified and warned, and the prank finally stopped. Sometimes the safest choice is to take repeated strange events seriously until the truth is uncovered.
