When my girlfriend returned from walking our dog, she immediately noticed something unusual tangled deep in his fur. At first glance, it looked almost like a strange sea creature or a tiny alien with dozens of thin spikes running along its body. Neither of us had ever seen anything like it, and we couldn’t figure out whether it had come from a plant, an insect, or another animal.

Their sharp barbs can sometimes work deeper into an animal’s coat or even into the skin, ears, nose, or paws if left unnoticed. After hearing that, we gave our dog a thorough inspection and were relieved to find no others hidden in his fur.
What first looked like a bizarre creature turned out to be a clever survival strategy used by certain plants. It was a good reminder to check pets after walks, especially through tall grass or fields, because sometimes the strangest discoveries aren’t animals at all—they’re seeds looking for a ride.
