My relationship with my boyfriend had already been falling apart when I discovered something I never imagined possible: he had secretly become involved with my mother. The betrayal destroyed whatever remained between us, but the biggest shock came several months later when they announced they were getting married. My mother insisted that their relationship was genuine and that I would eventually understand.
I refused to attend the wedding. Friends told me they looked incredibly happy together, and my mother called afterward saying she had finally found the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. I stopped arguing with her. She had made her decision, and painful as it was, I decided to remove myself from their lives.
Only ten days after the wedding, however, my mother discovered something that changed everything. While looking through paperwork in their bedroom, she found documents showing that her new husband was drowning in debt. I couldn’t erase what had happened, and forgiveness didn’t come immediately, but her discovery finally ended the marriage she had defended so fiercely.
