If You’re Bitten by a Snake, Here’s What to Do and What to Avoid…

A snakebite can become a medical emergency quickly, and the safest response is to treat any unknown snake as potentially venomous. Do not rely on the shape of the snake’s head, its pupils, fang marks, or the appearance of the wound to decide whether venom was injected. After a bite, move away from the snake and contact emergency medical services or get to an emergency department as quickly as possible.

While waiting for medical help, stay as calm and still as possible because unnecessary movement can increase the spread of venom through the body. Remove rings, watches, tight clothing, or anything else near the bitten area before swelling develops. Keep the affected limb relatively still and avoid walking unless getting away from immediate danger is necessary.

Several traditional snakebite remedies can actually make the situation worse. Never cut the wound, attempt to suck out the venom, apply ice, use electric shocks, or drink alcohol. A tight tourniquet should also not be improvised unless specifically directed by qualified medical professionals under local protocols, because completely restricting blood flow can cause serious tissue damage.

Do not attempt to catch or kill the snake. If it can be done safely from a distance, remembering its appearance or taking a photograph may help professionals, but getting close enough to risk another bite is never worthwhile. Doctors can assess symptoms, monitor blood clotting and organ function, provide supportive treatment, and administer antivenom when appropriate.

Most importantly, don’t wait for dramatic symptoms before seeking treatment. Some venomous bites initially cause surprisingly little pain or swelling, while serious effects can develop later. Quick medical evaluation, minimal movement, and avoiding dangerous home remedies give a snakebite victim the safest path to proper treatment.
