A family narrowly avoided tragedy after a seemingly harmless bedside habit caused an electrical fire while one of them was asleep. A phone had been left charging overnight on the bed, positioned close to the sleeper’s head and partially covered by bedding. Hours later, the charger and cable became dangerously hot, igniting the surrounding fabric before anyone realized what was happening.
The first warning came from the smell of burning material. Another family member woke up, entered the bedroom, and discovered flames and thick smoke spreading across the bedding beside the sleeping man. He was awakened immediately and pulled away while the power was disconnected and emergency services were called.
Firefighters determined that the fire had started around the charging equipment. Heat had built up where the phone, cable, and adapter were surrounded by soft bedding, which prevented heat from dissipating normally. Once part of the electrical equipment overheated, the nearby sheets and pillow provided combustible material that allowed the fire to spread rapidly.
What made the incident particularly frightening was the location. The burning charger had been only inches from the sleeper’s head, and because he was asleep, he had no idea anything was wrong until someone else noticed the fire. The mattress, bedding, charging cable, and nearby items were badly damaged, but everyone escaped without serious injury.
Firefighters warned the family never to charge phones or other battery-powered electronics underneath pillows, blankets, or directly on beds and sofas. Devices should instead be charged on a hard, uncovered surface with compatible, undamaged charging equipment. The family said they had charged phones beside the bed countless times without thinking about it, but after seeing how quickly one overheated charger could ignite their bedding, they promised never to repeat the habit.
