I Lost My Appetite After Cracking This Egg

This morning started normally. I walked into the kitchen, heated a frying pan, and cracked an egg onto a plate. But instead of immediately putting it into the pan, I froze when I noticed a long, white, ribbon-like strand curled around the yolk.

My first thought was that something was seriously wrong with the egg. The strange strand looked almost worm-like, and after staring at it for several minutes, breakfast suddenly wasn’t appealing anymore. I even wondered whether the egg had somehow been fertilized or contaminated.

The explanation, however, is much less alarming. That strange white strand is called the chalaza, a completely natural part of an egg. Chalazae are twisted, cord-like strands of egg white that help anchor the yolk and keep it positioned near the center of the egg.

It isn’t a worm, parasite, embryo, or sign that the egg has gone bad. In fact, prominent chalazae are generally associated with fresher eggs because these strands become weaker and less noticeable as an egg ages. They are also completely edible and normally become unnoticeable after cooking.

So after half an hour of staring suspiciously at my breakfast, the answer turned out to be surprisingly simple: there was nothing abnormal hiding inside the egg at all. The creepy-looking white “ribbon” was simply part of the egg’s natural structure—and ironically, its visibility was more reassuring than alarming.
