The image comes from the world of The Blue Lagoon, the 1980 romantic adventure starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins as Emmeline and Richard, two young people who grow up isolated on a tropical island. The film became famous for its lush scenery and unusually natural-looking island sequences, much of which was filmed on location in Fiji.
What makes photographs like this so striking is how little the production relied on a conventional studio environment. Nanuya Levu was selected after director Randal Kleiser considered hundreds of islands, searching for somewhere that could convincingly resemble the untouched paradise described in the original story.
Look more closely at the surroundings and the illusion becomes even more impressive. The dense vegetation, tall grass and tropical landscape weren’t simply a painted Hollywood backdrop. Production records confirm that principal photography began on Nanuya Levu in Fiji in June 1979, with additional locations used for the movie.
There was still plenty of filmmaking trickery behind that supposedly untouched paradise. Production accounts describe modifications made to the island, including an artificial waterfall and other constructed elements. Even brown foliage reportedly had to be made greener for filming, while non-native pine trees were carefully kept outside the camera frame.
So the surprising detail isn’t a hidden figure or a modern digital edit. It’s how much of the exotic environment surrounding the two characters was genuinely photographed outdoors on tropical islands while the crew carefully manipulated individual details to create the seemingly perfect wilderness audiences saw on screen.
