The girl ahead of me at the checkout was four dollars short on a birthday cake. She quietly counted the money in her hand twice before telling the cashier she would put the cake back. I handed over the missing four dollars before she could leave. She immediately hugged me and whispered, “It’s for Mom. She’s sick. This will be her last birthday.”
She hurried away carrying the cake, and I stood there thinking about what she had said. I had lost my own mother several years earlier, and something about the girl’s desperation stayed with me. I finished paying for my groceries and walked toward the parking lot, still hoping that her mother would get to enjoy the birthday she had worked so hard to give her.
Halfway to my car, I suddenly felt something heavy inside my coat pocket. I reached inside and pulled out a small silver locket I had never seen before. My hands began shaking when I opened it. Inside was an old photograph of my mother as a young woman, standing beside another woman and holding a baby.
On the back were several faded words written in my mother’s handwriting: “For my sister—until we find each other again.” I rushed back inside and asked the cashier about the girl. After describing her, another employee remembered seeing her leave with an older woman who had been waiting near the entrance. I followed them outside and found them sitting together at a nearby bus stop.
The sick woman stared at the locket and immediately began crying. She was my mother’s younger sister, separated from the family as a child and never reunited with her. The girl had slipped the locket into my pocket during the hug because she believed it was worth something and wanted to repay my kindness. Instead, four dollars spent on a stranger’s birthday cake reunited me with an aunt and cousin I never knew existed.
