Scientists have been studying an extraordinary substance commonly called cockroach milk, and its nutritional density has attracted attention as a possible inspiration for future foods. It comes from Diploptera punctata, the Pacific beetle cockroach, a rare cockroach species that gives birth to live young and produces a milk-like secretion to nourish its developing embryos.
Inside the embryos, nutrients from this secretion form tiny protein crystals. Researchers found that these crystals contain proteins, carbohydrates and fats, including essential amino acids. Earlier analysis of the secretion found substantial amounts of protein along with carbohydrates and lipids, explaining why it provides such concentrated nourishment to developing offspring.
The most surprising discovery concerns its energy density. A 2016 structural study estimated that a single cockroach-milk protein crystal contains more than three times the energy of an equivalent mass of dairy milk. This finding is behind many claims describing cockroach milk as several times more nutritious than ordinary cow’s milk, although “four times better” is an oversimplification rather than a direct scientific conclusion.
That doesn’t mean cartons of cockroach milk are about to replace cow’s milk in supermarkets. Producing and harvesting the substance on a large scale remains extremely impractical, and its potential use as a human food would require much more research into safety, production and processing. Scientists are particularly interested in understanding its unusually efficient way of packaging proteins, fats and sugars into a concentrated nutrient source.
So there is genuine science behind the bizarre headline. Cockroach milk really is an exceptionally nutrient-dense substance, and researchers have explored its potential as a future superfood. The more realistic possibility, however, may be reproducing its valuable proteins or nutritional properties through biotechnology rather than expecting people to drink milk harvested directly from cockroaches.
