Does Anyone Know What Kind of Insect This Is?

Finding something attached to your child’s scalp can be frightening, especially when it looks swollen and unfamiliar. The creature shown here is a tick, not an ordinary insect. Ticks are arachnids related to spiders, and after attaching to the skin and feeding on blood, their bodies can expand dramatically and become pale, gray, or beige.

The swollen appearance suggests an engorged tick, meaning it has been feeding for some time. Ticks often choose hidden areas where they can remain unnoticed, including the scalp, behind the ears, around the hairline, under the arms, and behind the knees. Children should therefore be checked carefully after spending time around tall grass, wooded areas, or brush.

If a tick is still attached, it should be removed promptly. The recommended method is to use clean, fine-tipped tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, and pull upward using steady, even pressure. Twisting or jerking should be avoided because this can leave parts of the tick embedded in the skin.

After removal, wash the bite area and your hands thoroughly with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Methods such as burning the tick or covering it with petroleum jelly, nail polish, or similar substances should not be used. It is also worth checking the rest of the child’s body because additional ticks may be present.

Most tick bites do not result in serious illness, but some ticks can transmit infections. Watch the child during the following days and weeks, and contact a healthcare professional if symptoms such as fever, a spreading rash, headache, unusual fatigue, or muscle aches develop. So the answer to the mystery is clear: the creature is an engorged tick, and prompt, proper removal is the important next step.
