Many drivers see this symbol every day without knowing exactly what it does. The button showing a small car with a curved arrow inside controls the vehicle’s air recirculation system, and knowing when to switch it on can make the cabin more comfortable.
When activated, the system reduces the amount of outside air entering through the climate-control system and instead recirculates air already inside the vehicle. This is especially useful on very hot days because the air conditioner can repeatedly cool air that is already cooler than the temperature outside.
It can also be useful temporarily when driving through heavy traffic, tunnels, dusty areas, or places with unpleasant outside odors. Switching to recirculation can reduce how much polluted or foul-smelling outside air is drawn directly into the cabin, although it does not create a perfectly sealed environment.
However, leaving recirculation on continuously isn’t always a good idea. In cold or humid weather, moisture from passengers’ breathing can accumulate and cause the windows to fog. Using fresh outside air—often together with the defroster and air conditioning—can help clear the windshield more effectively.
So the simple rule is: use recirculation when you want faster cooling or temporary protection from unpleasant outside air, and switch back to fresh air when the windows begin fogging or the cabin needs ventilation. It’s a small button, but understanding it can make a noticeable difference.
