The house next to ours had been empty for so long that we’d almost forgotten what it was like to have neighbors. When a new family finally moved in a few months ago, we were relieved. They seemed ordinary — a quiet dad, a polite mom, and a teenage son who kept to himself. Nothing unusual. Nothing alarming.
At least, that’s what we thought.
About two weeks after they settled in, the dad walked over while we were swimming and said, in a tone far too serious for the situation, that we needed to stop using our own pool. No explanation, no conversation — just a cold demand. We honestly thought he was joking or confused, so we simply ignored it.
That’s when things started to feel… wrong.
The next afternoon, as we stepped outside for a swim, a strange heaviness filled the air. Within minutes, we felt eyes on us. When we looked up, their teenage son stood on the balcony. Completely still. Completely expressionless. Just staring.
At first we thought he was just being awkward — until we noticed what he was holding.
It wasn’t a toy… and it wasn’t something any normal kid would casually have in his hands. His grip was tight, his knuckles white, and his eyes never left us for a second.
But then something even stranger happened.
His father rushed out behind him, grabbed the boy’s arm, yanked him back inside, and slammed the balcony door with such force it shook the railing. A loud argument erupted, voices overlapping, the boy shouting something we couldn’t understand… and then silence.
Dead, unsettling silence.
We stood there frozen, exchanging looks, realizing that the dad’s bizarre demand suddenly made sense — he didn’t want us outside, because he didn’t want us to see something.
And we did.
We had no idea that what we saw on that balcony was only the beginning of the truth that family was hiding… and why the boy kept watching our pool like he was waiting for something — or someone.
