The Lost Camp on Mount Hooker

When rescuers first spotted the hanging platform halfway up Mount Hooker, they assumed it was abandoned gear left behind by climbers years ago. But as they approached, a chilling silence settled over the team. The ropes were still neatly coiled, the bags zipped shut, and the camp looked untouched — as if someone planned to return at any moment. Only the still figure inside the faded sleeping bag revealed the truth. After eleven long years, the mountain had finally given up the secret of Garrett and his daughter Della.

The pair had left home fully prepared: spare ropes, climbing helmets, medical kits, and enough food to last through any bad weather. They were experienced, careful, and deeply connected — a father-daughter team that other climbers admired. But one mistake changed everything. Their satellite beacon, their only lifeline if things went wrong, was accidentally left behind in their truck. Without it, their disappearance became one of the region’s saddest mysteries, leaving family and search teams desperate for answers that never came.

Investigators now believe a sudden storm hit the ridge that night, tearing through the cliffs with violent winds and freezing temperatures. Their camp was perched on a narrow ledge — barely wide enough for their portaledge. One slip in the dark, or a single anchor giving way, could have triggered disaster. Evidence suggests that one of them tried to go for help while the other stayed behind, hoping to secure the gear until the storm passed. But the mountain’s fury left no chance for either of them.

Finding the camp brought heartbreak, but also closure. Rescuers noticed how carefully everything had been arranged: food still sealed, ropes packed with precision, personal belongings tucked safely inside their bags. Inside a small pocket, they found a shared journal. Its final entry described how beautiful the stars looked from the cliff that evening — calm, hopeful, unaware of what was coming. It was a reminder that they spent their last night together in the place they loved most.

After eleven silent years, Mount Hooker finally returned them.
And their family, at last, had a way to say goodbye.
