Emily froze, staring at the glowing young woman who seemed far too happy for someone caught in the middle of a scandal. Her smile was warm, genuine—even relieved. Nothing made sense.
Daniel stepped closer, hands raised in surrender. “Emily… please. Sit down. Both of you.”
But Emily didn’t move. Her heart pounded so hard she could hear it in her ears. “Daniel, who is she?”
The young woman touched her belly and offered a shy smile. “I’m Lily. And… I’m your surrogate.”
The room spun.
“My what?” Emily whispered.
Daniel exhaled shakily. “I didn’t want to tell you until everything was certain. After all the heartbreak, after every disappointment… I couldn’t watch you suffer anymore. So months ago, I applied for a surrogacy program—quietly. I wanted to give us another chance, even if you had given up hope.”
Lily nodded enthusiastically. “Daniel told me how strong you were. How much you’ve been through. He wanted it to be a surprise once everything was safe.”
Emily stepped back, her hand gripping the couch for balance. “But why didn’t you tell me? Why come here today? Why lie?”
“Because I didn’t want to raise your hopes until there was hope,” Daniel said softly. “And Lily had an ultrasound today too. I came to support her… because she’s carrying our child. I was going to tell you tonight after dinner.”
Emily’s throat tightened. “And you didn’t know I was pregnant too.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears. “No. Emily… this is everything we ever wanted. We’re having two babies. Two miracles.”
Lily clapped her hands. “Cousins! Or siblings! Or… something adorable—we’ll figure that out!”
For the first time in years, Emily let out a real laugh, sharp and shaky, but real. Relief hit her so hard she had to sit. The universe hadn’t betrayed her—she just hadn’t seen the full picture.
Daniel knelt in front of her. “I did all this out of love. I just wanted to give you the family you dreamed of. I didn’t know we’d be blessed twice.”
Emily touched her belly, then glanced at Lily’s. Two futures. Two heartbeats. Two unexpected miracles born from years of pain.
And suddenly the fear, the suspicion, the heartbreak… melted into something she hadn’t felt in years.
Hope.
