The Game That Made My Dad Go Silent

When I was eight, I asked my dad if we could play something called “The Naked Man.” The color drained from his face instantly. He tried to stay calm, but his voice cracked when he asked what kind of game that was. I explained, completely innocent, that it was “the game we play when the babysitter is over.” That’s when he stood up so fast his chair scraped across the floor. He didn’t yell. He didn’t panic out loud. He just told me to show him the game immediately, no questions asked.

I remember walking down the hallway while he followed behind me, unusually quiet, his steps heavier than normal. I didn’t understand why he looked so tense. To me, this was just a funny game, something that made me laugh and filled slow afternoons when the babysitter came over. When we reached my room, I opened the closet door with excitement, fully expecting him to laugh along once he saw what I meant.

Inside the closet stood a life-sized plastic mannequin my babysitter used for her fashion classes. It was missing clothes most of the time because we dressed it up as part of a game. The “Naked Man” wasn’t a person at all—it was the mannequin. The game involved finding random household items to dress it in the funniest way possible before the timer ran out. Socks became hats. Towels became capes. It was ridiculous, harmless, and completely innocent.

My dad stared at the mannequin for several seconds without speaking. Then he let out the longest breath I’d ever heard, sat down on my bed, and started laughing—hard. The kind of laughter that comes after fear disappears. He explained, gently, that the name of the game had scared him more than anything he could remember, and that sometimes words can sound much worse than what they actually mean.

That night, he had a serious talk with the babysitter—not because anything bad happened, but because communication mattered. She laughed too when she heard the misunderstanding and immediately renamed the game “Dress the Dummy.” From that day on, my dad paid closer attention to details, asked more questions, and trusted explanations instead of jumping to conclusions.

Years later, he still tells the story, shaking his head and laughing at how close he came to calling the police over a plastic mannequin. It became a family reminder that panic without context can turn harmless moments into terrifying ones, and that sometimes the truth is far less dramatic than the words that introduce it.
