Why My Grandmother Always Kept a Lemon by Her Bed

When I was a child, I thought it was just one of my grandmother’s strange habits. Every night before sleeping, she placed a freshly cut lemon slice on a small plate next to her bed. The sharp citrus smell filled the room, and I never questioned it. It wasn’t until years later, when I stayed at her house again and asked why she did it, that she finally explained. What she told me sounded simple, almost too simple, but it stuck with me. After trying it myself, I understood why she never went to sleep without it nearby.

The first reason, she said, was the scent. Lemon releases natural oils into the air, especially when freshly cut. That smell can make a room feel cleaner, fresher, and less heavy. My grandmother believed it helped her breathe more comfortably at night, especially when her nose felt blocked or the air felt stale. I noticed the same thing almost immediately. The room felt lighter, and the sharp citrus scent replaced that musty nighttime smell that bedrooms sometimes develop after hours of closed windows.

She also believed the lemon helped her sleep more peacefully. Not because it was magical, but because scent affects the nervous system. A calm, familiar smell can signal the brain that it’s time to rest. For her, lemon was associated with cleanliness, daylight, and safety. I realized that when I placed a lemon by my bed, my mind felt less cluttered. I wasn’t thinking about stress as much. The smell became a quiet background reminder to relax, slow down, and let the day go.

Another reason surprised me. My grandmother said the lemon helped keep insects away. Flies, mosquitoes, and even ants tend to avoid strong citrus smells. In warmer months, she rarely had bugs near her bed, even with the windows open. When I tried this during summer, I noticed fewer mosquitoes hovering around at night. It wasn’t perfect, but it made a noticeable difference. For someone who hated chemical sprays, this small habit felt like a natural alternative that actually worked.

She also mentioned mood. Lemon has long been associated with alertness and positivity. Waking up to a light citrus scent instead of stale air made her mornings feel brighter. I experienced this myself. Instead of waking up groggy, I felt slightly more refreshed. It didn’t replace good sleep, but it made the transition from sleep to morning gentler. The smell wasn’t overpowering, just enough to remind my senses that a new day had started.

Now I understand why this habit stayed with her for decades. It costs almost nothing, takes no effort, and brings several small benefits at once. A fresher room, fewer insects, calmer sleep, and a better mood in the morning. It isn’t a miracle cure, and it won’t fix everything, but sometimes the smallest traditions carry the most comfort. That slice of lemon by the bed became more than a trick. It became a quiet ritual I now keep for myself.
