I Slept at My Friend’s Old Apartment — Then My Skin Started to Change

At first, I thought it was nothing. A couple of itchy spots on my legs and arms after spending a few days at my friend’s old apartment didn’t seem worth worrying about. The place was outdated but clean enough, and I brushed it off as maybe a reaction to dust or a different detergent. But by the second morning, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. Small red bumps had spread across my thighs, knees, and forearms, clustering in ways that didn’t look random. The itching wasn’t mild either. It was persistent, uncomfortable, and impossible to forget.

As the hours passed, the bumps became more noticeable. Some looked inflamed, others slightly raised, and a few seemed to follow faint lines or groups. That’s when the anxiety kicked in. I hadn’t changed soap, food, or medication. The only new variable was that apartment. I started replaying everything in my head: the old couch, the creaky bed, the musty smell that never fully went away. Suddenly, what felt like a harmless stay began to feel like a mistake I couldn’t undo.

After doing what most people do in a panic, I searched for answers. The possibilities were unsettling. Bed bugs. Fleas. Mites. Skin reactions caused by environments that haven’t been lived in for a while. Old apartments, especially those that sit empty, can harbor pests that don’t immediately reveal themselves. They bite at night, leave behind clustered marks, and disappear before morning, making it hard to connect the dots until it’s already on your skin.

When I finally saw a medical professional, the explanation was sobering but clarifying. The bumps were consistent with insect bites, likely from bed bugs or mites that had been living in the apartment unnoticed. These pests thrive in old furniture, mattresses, and cracks in walls, especially when a place hasn’t been properly treated between occupants. The reaction wasn’t dangerous, but it was intense because my skin was sensitive to repeated exposure over several nights.

The physical symptoms faded after treatment, but the experience stayed with me. It wasn’t just about the itching. It was the realization of how easily something like this can happen without warning. You don’t see the problem right away. You sleep, you relax, and your body quietly reacts before your mind catches up. It’s a reminder that environments matter more than we think, especially ones with a past we don’t fully know.

Now, I’m careful in ways I never was before. I check mattresses. I pay attention to smells, stains, and signs others might overlook. What seemed like a harmless favor turned into an uncomfortable lesson about old spaces and hidden risks. Those bumps weren’t just a skin issue. They were a warning I won’t ignore again.
