Doctors Reveal Why Boiling Eggshells Is Becoming a Quiet Health Habit

At first glance, it looks like kitchen waste. Broken eggshells tossed into a bucket or held in a palm don’t exactly scream “health secret.” But doctors and nutrition specialists say this overlooked habit has been quietly passed down for generations, and now science is finally explaining why so many people swear by boiling eggshells instead of throwing them away.

Eggshells are made up of nearly 90 percent calcium carbonate, a form of calcium that the human body can actually absorb when prepared correctly. When eggshells are boiled, they’re sterilized, softened, and stripped of harmful bacteria, making them safe for further use. This simple step transforms something most people discard into a natural mineral source that has been used in traditional remedies across different cultures.

After boiling, the shells are usually dried and crushed into a fine powder. Doctors explain that this powder can be added in very small amounts to foods like yogurt, soups, or smoothies. The calcium content supports bone strength, teeth health, and muscle function, especially for people who don’t consume enough dairy or have higher calcium needs as they age.

Some specialists also point out another benefit people don’t expect. Calcium plays a role in nerve signaling and muscle relaxation, which means adequate intake may help reduce leg cramps, brittle nails, and even chronic fatigue linked to mineral deficiencies. Medical professionals do stress moderation. Eggshell powder should never be consumed raw, unboiled, or in large quantities. Proper cleaning, boiling, and fine crushing are essential.
