The Postcard That Was Never Sent

When I was seventeen, my family went on vacation without me, and I stayed home to work my summer job. This was long before cell phones, so silence was normal and letters still mattered. They were supposed to be gone for seven days, and I settled into the quiet routine of an empty house, counting the days until they returned. Nothing felt strange at first. I had no reason to think anything unusual would happen.

On the seventh day, I found a postcard in the mailbox from my mother. The handwriting was unmistakably hers. She wrote that they had decided to visit friends in Vermont and would be home two days later than planned. I accepted it without question. Plans change. I taped the postcard to the fridge, adjusted my schedule, and moved on. It felt comforting, like proof that I hadn’t been forgotten.

Two days later, my family walked through the front door exactly as the postcard said they would. They apologized for staying longer and for not telling me. I laughed and told them it was fine, saying I already knew. I pointed to the postcard on the fridge, expecting the moment to pass easily.

Instead, everything stopped. My mother went pale and said she never sent a postcard. My father immediately agreed. They explained that the decision to visit Vermont was made last minute and that no message had been mailed. I handed her the postcard, confident it would clear things up. Her hands shook as she looked at it. The handwriting was hers. The message sounded like her. But she insisted she had never written it.

We checked everything. Dates. Postmark. Details. The postcard had arrived before they ever made the decision it described. No one could explain how it existed. There was no prank, no mistake, no logical answer. The postcard was real, and so was the silence that followed.

Years later, that postcard still haunts me. It’s one of the few moments in my life I can’t explain away. It didn’t fade with time. It stayed, quietly reminding me that sometimes reality doesn’t follow the rules we expect it to.
