Drivers Warned: This Item Is Now Mandatory in Your Car

A new warning has caught many motorists off guard, and it’s already causing confusion and panic among drivers. From this week onward, authorities have made it clear that failing to carry one specific item in your vehicle could result in on-the-spot fines. Many people are only finding out now — and some have already been penalized.

The item in question is a high-visibility reflective vest. Officials say every driver must have one inside the car, not locked in the trunk, but easily accessible from the driver’s seat. The rule is meant to protect motorists who are forced to stop due to breakdowns, accidents, or emergencies, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions.

According to enforcement officers, the biggest mistake drivers make is assuming their car’s hazard lights are enough. They’re not. If you exit your vehicle on a roadside without wearing a reflective vest, you could be fined immediately. In some areas, the fine applies even if the vest is in the car but not worn when required.

The rule is being enforced more strictly now due to a rise in roadside accidents involving stopped vehicles. Authorities say too many drivers have been struck while standing outside their cars, unseen by oncoming traffic. The reflective vest is meant to make drivers visible from a distance, reducing the risk of serious injury or death.

What’s surprising is how many people still don’t have one. Many older vehicles were sold without them, and drivers who rarely check safety regulations may have missed the update entirely. Officials recommend keeping at least one vest per driver, and ideally more if you travel with passengers who may also need to exit the vehicle.

If you drive regularly — even short distances — this is not something to ignore. A simple, inexpensive vest could save you money, points on your license, and potentially your life. Drivers are being urged to check their cars immediately before their next trip.
