Two old men were sitting quietly on a park bench, enjoying the afternoon breeze and watching the world go by. Birds chirped, children laughed in the distance, and everything felt calm and ordinary. Then a young, attractive woman jogged past them, wearing a sports bra and a tiny pair of shorts. As she ran by, one of the men couldn’t help but smile.
The woman noticed. She suddenly stopped, turned around, and marched back toward the bench, clearly annoyed. Standing in front of the men, she crossed her arms and snapped, “Why are you staring at me and grinning, you pervert?” Her tone was sharp, and a few people nearby slowed down, curious about what was happening.
The old man looked up at her calmly, not offended at all. With a gentle smile still on his face, he replied softly, “My dear, I’m not smiling at you.” The woman looked confused. “Then what are you smiling at?” she demanded, expecting an excuse.
The old man leaned back on the bench and said, “I’m smiling because at my age, I can still smile.”
His friend burst out laughing, the woman stood there stunned for a second, and then — despite herself — she rolled her eyes and walked away, shaking her head. Sometimes, wisdom doesn’t shout. It just smiles quietly and lets the moment pass.
