He Should’ve Thought Before He Spoke

It started as a normal day, the kind where nobody expects their entire night to go sideways. A husband looked at his wife and, without a single second of self-preservation, laughed and said her bum was getting really big. Bigger than the BBQ grill, he joked. He chuckled. She didn’t. She gave him a look so cold it could’ve lowered the temperature in the room, but she said nothing. That silence should have scared him more than yelling ever could.

Later that night, feeling brave and clearly forgetting the earlier comment, the husband climbed into bed and decided it was the perfect moment to be affectionate. He leaned in, smiling confidently, expecting things to go his way. His wife rolled over, shut it down instantly, and went back to scrolling on her phone like he didn’t exist. Confused and slightly offended, he asked what was wrong. She didn’t hesitate.

She told him that if his BBQ grill was so big and impressive, maybe he should go warm himself by that instead. The message landed hard. He tried to laugh it off, claiming it was just a joke, but the damage was already done. His confidence disappeared faster than his common sense earlier that day. The room went quiet, and he realized words don’t disappear just because you wish they would.

Later that night, after a few drinks, the husband staggered home from a bar feeling bold again. He crawled into bed, made another attempt, and whispered something he thought was charming. His wife didn’t even open her eyes. She simply said, “I don’t cook on broken grills.” Then she turned over and went to sleep.

The husband lay there staring at the ceiling, replaying every bad decision that had led him to this moment. Somewhere between the BBQ joke and the drinks, he learned a lesson men have been learning for generations: if you want peace at home, choose your jokes very carefully. Some punchlines cost you an entire night.
