This “Count the Squares” Puzzle Isn’t Testing Narcissism — Here’s What It’s Really About

Posts like this love to make big psychological claims. Count the squares, see your result, then get labeled as a narcissist—or not—based on how you answered. It sounds intriguing, maybe even a little unsettling. But the truth is much simpler.

This puzzle has nothing to do with narcissism.

What it does test is how carefully you observe patterns.

When people count the squares, most instinctively count only the obvious ones. Others slow down and notice overlapping shapes, smaller squares inside larger ones, or combinations formed by multiple blocks. The difference isn’t personality—it’s approach. Some people scan quickly. Others analyze step by step.

Psychologists don’t diagnose narcissism from visual puzzles. Real personality traits are assessed through validated questionnaires, long-term behavior patterns, and professional evaluation—not a single image shared on social media.

So why do posts like this exist?

Because attaching a bold label grabs attention. Calling it a “narcissism test” sparks curiosity, debate, and comments. People argue about the number. Others defend their answer. Engagement skyrockets—even though the claim itself has no scientific basis.

If you enjoyed the puzzle, that’s great. It’s a fun exercise in perception and focus. But your answer doesn’t say anything meaningful about your ego, empathy, or character.

In reality, the only thing this puzzle reveals is how you chose to look at it—and maybe how easily social media can turn a simple brain teaser into something it was never meant to be.
