Valentine’s night was supposed to feel perfect. He had insisted on the restaurant—dim lights, expensive menu, the kind of place people save for special moments. I thought it meant something, that maybe he was trying to make the night memorable. But when the $380 check arrived and he casually told me to split it, something inside me shifted instantly.
I refused.
Not because of the money, but because of what it represented. He had planned everything, pushed for something extravagant, and then suddenly made it feel transactional. Without arguing, he paid the full bill, stood up, and walked out without even looking back. I sat there in silence, trying to process what had just happened, feeling more confused than angry.
That’s when the waitress approached me.
She leaned in slightly and said, “I can’t keep quiet… your boyfriend left a note for you.” My stomach dropped as she handed it over. For a second, I didn’t even want to read it. But I did. “I came here tonight with a plan,” it began.
He wrote that he needed to see something clearly—whether I was there for the experience, the effort, or for him. He admitted that asking me to pay half wasn’t about money at all. It was a test. I sat there holding that note long after he was gone.
