An old farmer was hauling a truckload of manure down a country road when flashing lights appeared behind him. He pulled over, slow and calm, as a state trooper stepped out, clearly irritated by the swarm of flies buzzing around the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou were speeding,\u201d the trooper said firmly. \u201cI\u2019m going to have to give you a ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYep,\u201d the farmer replied casually, leaning on the truck as the officer waved his arms, trying to shoo the flies away from his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese flies are terrible,\u201d the trooper complained, swatting again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYep,\u201d the farmer nodded. \u201cThose are circle flies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trooper stopped writing and frowned. \u201cCircle flies? What\u2019s a circle fly?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The farmer scratched his chin and said, \u201cWell, circle flies are flies that fly around circles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trooper squinted. \u201cWhy do they fly around in circles?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The farmer smiled slightly and said, \u201cBecause they don\u2019t bother landing on anything that smells bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trooper froze. Looked at the truck. Looked at the manure. Then slowly looked back at the farmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou mean\u2026\u201d he started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYep,\u201d the farmer said. \u201cThat\u2019s why they keep circling you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ticket book snapped shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trooper cleared his throat, handed the farmer back his license, and said, \u201cSlow it down and have a nice day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
