That\u2019s why I\u2019m wearing black. To mourn the love we once had, Nathan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I couldn\u2019t believe what Jane just said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is not true, Jane,\u201d I pleaded. \u201cI swear I never ch:eat:ed on you. Lauren and I are just friends. I don\u2019t know why my mom would say that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Desperate to spot my mother in the crowd, but she was nowhere to be seen. I wanted to confront her, to prove she was lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t believe you,\u201d Jane said firmly. \u201cI know you\u2019re lying because that\u2019s what you\u2019ve always done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJane, please,\u201d I begged, reaching for her hand, but she pulled away. \u201cMom never liked you. She\u2019s trying to sabotage us. Please, you have to trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, I see. But it\u2019s not just about the affair, Nathan,\u201d Jane shook her head. \u201cI know your secret. I know you\u2019ve been lying to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat secret?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jane looked around the church and locked eyes with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
