It was a calm afternoon at the lake, the kind where the water barely rippled and families drifted lazily in rented boats. The manager of the boat-rental concession stepped to the shoreline, lifted his megaphone, and called out loudly, \u201cNumber 99, come in please. Your time is up.\u201d His voice echoed across the water, turning a few heads, but the lake stayed quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several minutes passed. Boat number 99 didn\u2019t move an inch toward the dock. The manager frowned, raised the megaphone again, and shouted even louder. \u201cBoat number 99, return to the dock immediately or I\u2019ll have to charge you overtime!\u201d Still nothing. Other boats floated by, parents waved, kids laughed \u2014 but number 99 was nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s when the assistant, who had been watching the scene unfold, leaned closer to the manager and lowered his voice. \u201cBoss,\u201d he said carefully, \u201csomething is wrong here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The manager snapped back, annoyed. \u201cWhat do you mean something is wrong? I can\u2019t find boat 99!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The assistant pointed toward the dock, where dozens of boats were tied up, each clearly marked. \u201cBoss,\u201d he said, trying not to laugh, \u201cwe only have boats numbered one through seventy-five.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
