If your dog suddenly starts sniffing around your genital area, it can feel embarrassing, especially when it happens around other people. But the behavior is usually far less mysterious than sensational headlines suggest. Dogs experience much of the world through scent, and certain parts of the human body naturally produce stronger and more distinctive odors.
The groin contains apocrine sweat glands, which release scent compounds that can give dogs a surprising amount of information. Because a dog’s sense of smell is dramatically more sensitive than ours, normal changes in sweat, hormones, hygiene products, or body odor may immediately attract their attention.
That means a dog sniffing this area does not automatically mean you have an infection, disease, or other medical condition. Dogs may become more interested when someone’s natural scent changes because of menstruation, pregnancy-related hormonal changes, recent exercise, sexual activity, or simply because they are meeting that person for the first time.
In some situations, an unusual or persistent change in body odor can accompany a medical issue, but a dog’s behavior cannot diagnose it. Symptoms such as unusual discharge, persistent itching, sores, pain, strong unexplained odor, or other noticeable changes are reasons to speak with a healthcare professional rather than relying on how a pet behaves.
So the answer is much simpler than the headline makes it sound: your dog is most likely detecting concentrated natural body scents and hormonal information. To a dog, sniffing is essentially a way of gathering information—even if its choice of where to investigate can create a very awkward moment for its owner.
