Why Your Roommate Leaves a Wet Towel on the Window — The Reason Might Surprise You

At first glance, it looks strange and honestly a little annoying. A wet towel left on the windowsill every night, soaking the surface and making the room feel messy. When asked about it, your roommate avoids explaining, which only makes the situation more confusing. But what seems like an odd habit may actually have a practical reason behind it.

One of the most common reasons for placing a wet towel near a window is to increase humidity in the room. In colder months or in rooms with heating or air conditioning, indoor air can become very dry. Dry air can cause irritated skin, dry throat, sinus problems, and even trouble sleeping. A damp towel slowly releases moisture into the air overnight, acting as a simple, low-cost humidifier.

Another possible reason is temperature control. Windows are often the coldest part of a room, and placing a damp towel there can slightly cool the air nearby as the water evaporates. Some people do this to make sleeping more comfortable, especially if the room feels stuffy or overheated at night.

It may also be related to preventing static electricity or improving breathing. Dry environments increase static and can worsen allergies or respiratory discomfort. Adding moisture helps balance the air and can make the space feel less harsh, especially during winter when humidity levels drop significantly.

There’s also a chance your roommate uses this method for personal comfort reasons they may not want to discuss, such as sinus sensitivity, skin conditions, or sleep issues. Many people adopt small routines that help them feel better physically without realizing how unusual they might look to someone else.

If the wet towel is causing water damage or mess, the best solution is a calm conversation about finding a compromise — like using a small humidifier, placing the towel in a tray, or choosing a different spot. What seems like an annoying habit might actually be a simple way your roommate is trying to make the room more comfortable.

Sometimes the strangest habits turn out to be quiet solutions to problems you didn’t even know existed.
