The Freezer Trick Everyone Should Know

It sounds strange at first — putting a coin in a cup of frozen water before leaving your home. Most people would never think twice about something like this. But this simple trick has been quietly shared for years, and once you understand the reason behind it, you might never travel without doing it again.

Before leaving for a trip or being away for several days, fill a cup with water and place it in your freezer. Once the water is completely frozen solid, place a coin on top of the ice and put the cup back inside. That’s it. It takes less than a minute, but it can tell you something extremely important when you return.

The purpose of this trick is to detect whether your freezer — and the food inside it — stayed frozen the entire time you were away. Power outages, appliance failures, or electrical issues can sometimes happen without you realizing it, especially if the electricity comes back on before you return home.

When the power goes out, the freezer temperature rises and the ice begins to melt. If the outage lasts long enough, the ice will turn into water. Once the electricity comes back, the water freezes again — but the coin will no longer be on top. Instead, it will sink to the bottom or stay somewhere in the middle.

That position tells the whole story. If the coin is still sitting on top of the ice, your freezer stayed frozen the entire time and your food is likely safe. But if the coin is at the bottom, it means the ice melted completely at some point — and your food may have thawed and refrozen, which can be unsafe to eat.

This simple trick has helped many people avoid food poisoning, spoiled groceries, and the risk of eating something that went bad without any visible signs. It’s especially useful for long trips, vacations, or anyone living in areas where power outages are common.

Sometimes the smartest safety tips are the simplest ones — and this tiny coin could save you from a much bigger problem than you ever expected.
